October is National Fire Prevention Month.
The American Red Cross says that on average there are 36 people that are injured and 7 people killed per year due to house fires. Also they state that every year there is 7 billion dollars worth of damage as a direct result of house fires.
There are many things you can do to help prevent a fire in your home and help you avoid being a statistic.
- Never use appliances or electronics with damaged electrical cords
- Never leave portable fireplaces, candles and heaters unattended
- Never leave appliances such as ovens, curling/flat irons on and unattended
- Have your HVAC tested and always repair when needed
- Be sure to keep flammable materials away from sources of heat
- Make sure you always empty the lint tray when you use your dryer
- Keep lighters and matches in a safe place that is not accessible to children
Even with multiple habits and measures in place to prevent a fire it is always best to be prepared for a fire and be ready for action if one was to break out.
- Teach children how to dial 911 in case of any emergency
- Have at least two emergency escape routes and be sure that all members of the household know what they are
- Everyone in the house, no matter what age needs to know how to stop, drop and roll in case an article of clothing catches on fire
- Have fire detectors located in every bedroom, outside every sleeping area, and on every floor of the house
- Test fire detectors monthly
- Replace the batteries in fire detectors at least once a year
